Perception of Special Education Teachers on Sex Education in High School

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the current sexual attitude of special education students, the current condition of sex education in special education classrooms as well as analyze the demand for and future direction of sex education. Participants included ten special education teachers working in Busan, six of which participated in focus group interviews; A qualitative method was employed. Data was collected by in-depth interviews and was subsequently analyzed and interpreted for three main topics: special students¡¯ understanding of knowledge of sexual matters, characteristics of sex educational program provided to special students, improvement for effective sex educational program. The results are as follows: First, the understanding of attitudes towards sexual intercourse and other sexual behavior by special education teachers was low. Second, sex education was proceeded by educational field, professional instructor and sex educational materials. However, in reality sex education was not systematic, nor there has been progress in the development of it. Third, special education teachers believed there was a great need to develop a sex education curriculum specifically for special education students, teacher training programs as well as identify strategies to help parents of special education students recognize the need for sex education.
